Marbella is easy to reach, but the best route depends on where you are coming from. For most travellers, Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport is the simplest arrival point because it is the main airport on the Costa del Sol and offers access by bus, taxi, train connection and car. Gibraltar can also work as an alternative arrival point for some itineraries.
Quick answer: Marbella does not have its own airport. The closest is Málaga-Costa del Sol (AGP), ~50 km away. The simplest public option is the direct Avanza bus from Terminal 3 Arrivals (~50 min, ~€8). There is no direct train to Marbella.

The key thing to know is this: Marbella does not have its own train station. If you are arriving by rail, your journey will normally continue from Málaga or Fuengirola by road. Aena confirms that the airport is connected to the Cercanías Málaga network, which links Málaga Airport with Málaga city and Fuengirola.
The easiest way to get to Marbella from Málaga Airport
Direct bus — Avanza L-611
Málaga Airport Terminal 3 → Marbella Bus Station
The direct Avanza bus from Málaga Airport is the best value option to Marbella. It departs from the bus stops outside Terminal 3 Arrivals and drops you at Marbella’s main bus station, from where a short taxi or local bus takes you to the seafront or Old Town.
Check the Avanza PDF timetable and buy tickets online in advance — especially in summer when buses fill quickly, as the service originates in Málaga city.
Taxi
Official rank at arrivals — no booking needed
The official taxi rank is signposted as you exit arrivals at Málaga Airport. All taxis must use meters — confirm it is activated at the start. Ideal for late arrivals (after buses stop around midnight), heavy luggage, or small groups where the cost splits well.
Private transfer
Pre-booked meet-and-greet — direct to your accommodation
A private transfer means your driver meets you in the arrivals hall with a name sign — fixed price agreed in advance, door to door. This is the most practical option for families, groups with luggage, or anyone staying at a private villa outside the town centre. Providers like Shuttle Direct and Get Transfer both cover the Málaga Airport–Marbella route with child seat options.
Rental car
AP-7 motorway direct — 50 km, ~35 min
Renting a car is the best option if you plan to explore the Costa del Sol — Puerto Banús, Estepona, Ronda and Málaga are all easy day trips. The Málaga Airport car hire page lists all operators in the terminal. Book in advance for summer — July and August prices can be double or triple spring rates.
Train + bus (via Fuengirola)
Cercanías C-1 to Fuengirola, then connecting bus
Marbella does not have a train station. The Cercanías C-1 line from the airport reaches Fuengirola (end of the line), from where you need a connecting bus or taxi to Marbella — nearly double the direct bus time for the same price. Review the Cercanías route map and live timetables on the Renfe website.
This combination only makes sense if you want to stop in Fuengirola, Torremolinos or Benalmádena along the way.
Can you get to Marbella by train?
Not directly. Marbella does not currently have a train station, so rail travel to Marbella requires an onward road connection. You can use the Cercanías Málaga service between Málaga Airport, Málaga city and Fuengirola, then continue by bus or taxi. You can also review the Cercanías Málaga route map and check live Cercanías timetables before travelling.
In practical terms, the train works best for this route:
train to Málaga or Fuengirola → onward bus or taxi to Marbella.
Getting to Marbella from Málaga city
If you are already in Málaga city, the most practical public transport option is usually the coach. You can check official route information through Avanza’s Marbella destination page, which also links to timetable updates and PDF schedules. If you prefer rail for the first stretch, you can use Cercanías Málaga toward Fuengirola and continue by road.

For most travellers, the coach is the cleaner option because it avoids an extra transfer. The train-plus-transfer route is more useful if you are already close to a Cercanías station. This is an inference based on the published transport structure.
Getting to Marbella from Gibraltar Airport
Gibraltar is a secondary option, but it can work well depending on your flights and travel plans. The official Gibraltar Airport website provides passenger information, and its airport access page explains how to arrive by car, bus, taxi or on foot. The airport also lists car hire at Gibraltar Airport, which is useful if you want to continue directly to Marbella by road.
This route makes the most sense if you are combining Marbella with Gibraltar, staying on the western side of the Costa del Sol, or prefer to drive yourself after landing. That is a practical inference from the airport access and car hire options.
Getting to Marbella from Madrid

If you are arriving in Spain through Madrid, the easiest approach is usually to continue first to Málaga. You can check long-distance and high-speed options on the official Renfe website, then continue from Málaga to Marbella by road. Once in Málaga, the final leg is easiest by coach, taxi or car.
That means the two most practical routes are:
- Madrid to Málaga by train, then onward by road to Marbella
- Madrid to Málaga by flight, then use the direct Málaga Airport to Marbella bus, taxi or rental car.
Getting to Marbella from nearby Andalusian cities
If you are travelling from cities such as Seville or Granada, Marbella is usually easiest to reach by road. For public transport, the most relevant places to check are the Avanza Marbella route page and the ALSA Marbella destination page, depending on your starting point and available services.
As a rule, choose car if you want flexibility, coach if you want a simpler public transport option, and train only for the Málaga leg, since rail does not continue directly into Marbella.
From
Gibraltar Airport (GIB)
A practical alternative for UK travellers with direct flights from many British cities. From Gibraltar Airport, continue by rental car or taxi northbound via the AP-7. No direct public transport — car hire or private transfer is the only realistic option.
From
Sevilla
Fastest by car via the A-92 through Antequera. ALSA operates coach services between Sevilla and Marbella. By rail, take the high-speed AVE to Málaga (~2h) then the direct Avanza bus to Marbella.
From
Madrid
Quickest option: fly to Málaga then take the direct airport bus to Marbella. The high-speed AVE to Málaga María Zambrano is also excellent — the bus terminal is right next to the train station.
From
Granada
An easy and scenic drive via the A-7 coastal road or the inland A-44 / AP-46. ALSA also runs direct coaches between Granada and Marbella — a good option if you prefer not to drive through the mountains.
Which option is best?
Best overall: arriving via Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport and continuing by direct bus, taxi or car.
Best low-cost option: the direct bus from Málaga Airport to Marbella.
Best for flexibility: a rental car from Málaga Airport or Gibraltar Airport.
Best if arriving by train: use Renfe Cercanías Málaga or long-distance rail to Málaga first, then continue by road because Marbella has no train station.
